A plucked guitar string can vibrate for seconds before falling silent. A playground swing, emptied of its passenger, will gradually come to rest. These are what physicists call “damped harmonic oscillators” and are well understood in terms of Newton’s laws of motion.
Electricity flows through wires to deliver power, but it loses energy as it moves, delivering less than it started with. But that energy loss isn’t a given. Scientists at Penn State have found a new way to identify types of materials known as superconductors that allow power to travel without any resistance, meaning no energy is lost.

Ursa Major III, the faintest object in our galaxy, orbits the Milky Way at a distance of more than 30,000 light years. Until now, it was considered a dwarf galaxy, thought to consist mainly of dark matter due to its large mass. However, an international team of astrophysicists from the University of Bonn and the Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences in Iran has found evidence suggesting that it is actually a compact star cluster containing a black hole core. The study has been published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
Researchers at the College of Design and Engineering (CDE) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) have developed a supramolecular co-assembly platform that produces chiral soft materials with strong and stable full-color circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) across the visible spectrum, including in red, which has historically been a difficult target.
Scientists have turned a longstanding challenge in electronics—material defects—into a quantum-enhanced solution, paving the way for new-generation ultra-low-power spintronic devices. Spintronics, short for “spin electronics,” is a field of technology that aims to go beyond the limits of conventional electronics.
Using new techniques, Yale researchers have demonstrated the ability to use lasers to cool quantized vibrations of sound within massive objects to their quantum ground state, the lowest energy allowable by quantum mechanics. This breakthrough could benefit communications, quantum computing, and other applications. The results are published in Nature Physics.
From immigration crackdowns to federal control of city police, President Trump’s first six months have reshaped law enforcement — are they helping officers do their jobs?
A union official says officers’ street-level experiences contradict MPD’s claim of a 60% decrease since 2023
Features of spaceflight such as gravitational changes and circadian rhythm disruption—not to mention radiation—take a toll on the body, including muscle wasting and decreased bone density. These may even affect the ability to produce healthy offspring.

For the first time, researchers at Umeå University have demonstrated the full capabilities of their large-scale laser facility. In a study published in Nature Photonics, the team reports generating a combination of ultrashort laser pulses, extreme peak power, and precisely controlled waveforms that make it possible to explore the fastest processes in nature.
Nostradamus wrote: “The False Trumpet concealing madness will cause Byzantium to change its laws. From Egypt there will go forth a man who wants the edict withdrawn, changing money and standards. The trumpet shakes with great discord. An agreement broken: lifting the face to heaven: the bloody mouth will swim with blood; the face anointed with milk and honey lies on the ground.” Not many people know that Michel de Nostradame—commonly known only as NOSTRADAMUS—was a chemist and apothecary, before writing down four-line poetic verses called “quatrains” which seem to have predicted numerous events in the future. In addition to writing numerous prophetic texts, Nostradamus is known for having written at least two books on medical science. One of his most famous works is, without a doubt, the ‘Les Prophecies’. The first edition of Nostradamus’ work appeared in 1555 and ever since the publication of Les Prophecies, Michel de Nostredame, aka Nostradamus, has been credited with predicting major world events. His second piece was published in 1557 and contained a total of 289 prophetic verses for the future. Nostradamus’ third edition was printed in 1558 containing 300 quatrains however according to reports it now only survives as part of the omnibus edition that was published after his death in 1568. This version is believed to have one unrhymed and a total of 941 rhymed quatrains written by the French seer and compiled into nine sets of 100 and one of 42, called ‘Centuries’. Among the most notary predictions—that according to many were accurately foreseen by the great Nostradamus—are the French Revolution, Adolf Hitler’s rise to power and 9/11. However, not only did Nostradamus get all of that right, it is believed that the 16th-century prophet even managed to predict Trump’s presidential win: “The great shameless, audacious bawler. He will be elected governor of the army: The boldness of his contention. The bridge broken, the city faint from fear.” Now, it is believed that when Nostradamus spoke about the Anti-Christ he was referring to the newly appointed, 45th president of the United States: Donald Trump. Those who have followed the predictions by Nostradamus firmly argue that Trumps it the Anti-Christ who will cause World War 3, and to back up their claims they point to the following verses written down by Michel de Nostradame hundreds of years ago: The False Trumpet concealing madness will cause Byzantium to change its laws. From Egypt there will go forth a man who wants the edict withdrawn, changing money and standards. The trumpet shakes with great discord. An agreement broken: lifting the face to heaven: the bloody mouth will swim with blood; the face anointed with milk and honey lies on the ground. According to Arthur Evans—who wrote the article “What are Presidential election Predictions 2016 of Nostradamus—those who believe in the ‘predictions’ of Nostradamus argue that the ‘false trumpet’ mentioned by the French apothecary represents the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump—who is “concealing his own madness“. In an article about Nostradamus, Evans concluded: “Is Donald Trump really the Antichrist who will cause World War III, a nuclear war or biological warfare sustaining for 27 years? No one can be certain about this; however, I am pretty sure right now is the start to Nostradamus’ prediction of the apocalypse.” Featured image Illustration by the New York Post
