Lasers aren’t just useful for entertaining cats or pointing out features of PowerPoint slides. They can also drill holes on icy extraterrestrial bodies from comets to Mars polar caps—at least, according to a new paper published in Acta Astronautica by researchers at the Technical University of Dresden, who describe a new laser drill for use on icy surfaces throughout our solar system.

An international collaboration has developed a new diagnostic technique for measuring ultra-short particle beams at STFC’s Central Laser Facility. This collaboration is led by the University of Michigan and Queen’s University Belfast. The research addresses a key challenge in developing compact alternatives to kilometer-long particle accelerators.
According to a study by scientists from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), fast radio bursts that could be ‘signals from advanced alien civilizations’ are firing off every second in our universe. Astronomers have only found a couple of dozen FRBs (Fast Radio Bursts), and they still have not understood what causes these rapid and powerful radio broadcast bursts. Some say its aliens, while others say it’s a combination of different cosmic phenomena that are yet to be identified, but the truth is, we honestly don’t know what causes them. Now, for the first time ever, two astronomers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) have estimated how many FRBs should occur throughout the observable universe. Their work indicates that at least one FRB is produced somewhere in the cosmos every second. “If we are right about such a high percentage of FRBs occurring at any given time, you can imagine the sky is filled with flashes like paparazzi taking photos of a celebrity,” said Anastasia Fialkov of the CfA, who led the study. “Instead of the light we can observe with our own eyes, these enigmatic flashes come in radio waves.” In order to come to this conclusion—which many are findings surprising—Fialkov and co-author Avi Loeb assumed that FRB 121102, a rapid radio burst located in a galaxy about 3 billion light-years from Earth, is ‘representative’ of all FRBs in the cosmos.  Due to the fact that this FRB has produced repeated bursts since it was discovered back in 2012, astronomers have been able to study it in much more detail than any other FRBs. Using that information, they calculated how many FRBs would exist throughout the known universe. “In the time it takes you to drink a cup of coffee, hundreds of FRBs may have gone off somewhere in the Universe,” said Avi Loeb. “If we can analyze even a portion of those well enough, we should be able to unravel their origin.” Experts are still not able to pinpoint the exact origin of FRBs, but most experts agree on the idea that FRBs originate in galaxies located billions of light-years away. One leading scientific theory is that FRBs are the byproducts of young, rapidly spinning neutron stars with extraordinarily strong magnetic fields. Scientists point out that FRBs can help us study the structure and evolution of our Universe, regardless of whether or not their origin is fully understood. A large population of FRBs could act as a probe of material across humongous distances. As noted by CfA, the intervening material is able to blur the signal from the cosmic microwave background (CMB)—which is the leftover radiation from the Big Bang. A careful analysis of this intervening material could provide an enhanced understanding of fundamental cosmic constituents, such as the relativistic quantities of ordinary matter, dark matter, and dark energy, which influence how rapidly the universe is expanding, and if of course, it is expanding at all. The research study authored by Fialkov and Loeb explaining these results was published in the September 10, 2017, issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters, and is available online. Astronomers from Ruhr University Bochum in Germany and elsewhere have conducted radio spectropolarimetric observations of a recently identified odd radio circle designated ORC J0356–4216. Results of the observational campaign, presented Sept. 5 on the arXiv pre-print server, shed more light on the nature of this object.

Is it hard to believe they could have constructed powerful vessels that would have allowed them to travel to other continents? According to DNA analysis performed on ancient Egyptian mummies, this may not be just ‘another crazy conspiracy.’ Dr. Svetla Balabanova was left in total disbelief when she saw the results of her own analyzes. The prestigious German medical examiner had been commissioned to analyze several mummies looking for traces of drug use in the rulers of ancient Egypt. What she found was considered to be a history changer. After analyzing several ancient Egyptian mummies, the researchers discovered the presence of high levels of cocaine, nicotine, and tetrahydrocannabinol in bodies that were preserved for thousands of years. With scientific rigor, Dr. Balabanova repeated the tests several times and sent samples to other laboratories for independent testing. All successive analyzes confirmed the initial results. Ancient Egyptian mummies had high levels of cocaine, nicotine, and tetrahydrocannabinol. But where did the ancient Egyptians obtain the products from? Despite finding evidence, the scientific community remained skeptical, accusing the researchers who had made the discovery of incompetence. They began by stating that the mummies were false until they were proven to be authentic. Then they went on to argue that they were contaminated until it was shown that it is impossible to contaminate the inner stem of a hair. They then claimed that the experiments were not reproducible until an independent group of experts found traces of cocaine and nicotine in other Egyptian mummies in a British museum. Finally, they ended up defending the indefensible: that tobacco and coca did not come from South America but rather were very rare varieties of African origin. Coca and tobacco are undoubtedly originating in South America. The Egyptians apparently had the ability to build the Pyramid but did not have sufficient naval skills to cross the Atlantic Ocean. How can we explain these controversial results? Is it possible that the Ancient Egyptians traveled somehow to the American continent thousands of years ago? Or could this be evidence enough that a highly advanced civilization existed on Earth thousands of years ago? A civilization that had knowledge and technologies that neither the Egyptians nor the Greeks nor the Romans had at that time? Whatever it may have been, many authors agree that this is irrefutable proof that the ancient Egyptians had contact with products that originated halfway around the globe; on the American Continent.ž But what if we are wrong? When the JWST finally began its long-awaited science operations in July 2022, there was a long list of targets awaiting its attention. Scientists compete for observing time by submitting proposals, and for every nine submitted proposals, only one gets approved. In the most recent Cycle 4 of the telescope’s mission, scientists requested about 78,000 hours of observing time when only about 8700 were available.

This cave is probably beyond anything you’ve ever come across! It’s mesmerizing, it’s mysterious, it’s beautiful and magical. Discovered—or better said rediscovered—in 1990 by a man traveling through the jungles of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Ho Khanh was searching the area for timber and food in order to make money in order to survive. Little did he know that his search for food and timber would take him to uncover a magical, otherworldly place. Ho Khanh explored the place as best as he could but eventually went back home. A few days later, when he thought about returning to the mystery cave to explore it, he couldn’t remember the exact location where he had found the entrance. Eventually, Khanh forgot about it.  Eventually, members of the British Cave Research Association (BCRA), Howard and Deb Limbert were exploring Phong Nha, conducting exploratory missions in the area. One day they spoke to Khanh who mentioned the mesmerizing cave he had come across. The British Cave explores were fascinated by what Khanh had told them and urged him to try and rediscover it once again. Many failed attempts went by as they searched for the cave entrance, and just when they thought they would never rediscover it, in 2008 Ho Khanh found its ‘otherworldly portal,’ a supermassive cave hidden for centuries far from mankind’s reach. Eventually, Khanh led the British cave explorers to the cave in 2009 as they performed the first-ever expedition to enter what would later become known as the Hang Son Doong cave, or the ‘Mountain River Cave’. The cave is massive. It’s humongous. It’s so big that many claim a Boeing 747 could easily fly through its largest cavern.  The interior of the cave is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Its ‘alien-like’ landscapes are most likely exclusive to the cave, as many who have entered it have said that they’ve never seen anything like it anywhere else in the world. The cave is one massive ecosystem, so big that it’s as if you’ve entered the ‘inner world’. In fact, it’s so mesmerizing that entire jungles emerge from inside the cave, a landscape so magical that you cannot appreciate its true beauty until you are actually there. Australian photographer John Spies, who spent a week living inside the cave describes it in an interview with The NYPost. “The cave is a humbling and belittling experience,” says John Spies. “It is amazing to be [five miles] inside the cave and have daylight illuminate the cave formations. The dimensions of the cave are incredible. … To camp for five nights in the biggest cave in the world is not something most of us get to do in our lifetime.” “The entrance is quite small and mist from the cave, caused by the cooler air inside meeting the hot air outside, rises into the surrounding forest,” Spies said. “The cave is harder to get into than the Batcave.” “To enter it, visitors must scale a 260-foot wall, using a harness and rope.
