The Onega Petroglyphs: Depictions of sky beings from 6,000 BC?

The Onega petroglyphs are rock engravings located on the east coast of Lake Onega in the northwest of Russia. According to reports, the thousands of petroglyphs date back to around 5,000—6,000 BC.

Experts have identified around 1,200 petroglyphs scattered in an area of 20 km, including several capes, such as Besov Nos, which features the mysterious ‘Demon petroglyph’.

The engravings are 1-2 mm deep and represent animals, people, boats and geometric shapes, such as circular and half-moon symbols, but also what some authors even suggest may be representations of constellations.

The Onega Petroglyphs—located in the Karelian Republic—are considered as the most complex and expressive rock art examples in northern Europe.

The enigmatic figures etched in rock on the shores of Lake Onega feature countless ancient symbols that depict religious, and ritual scenes, as well as warfare and everyday life.

The first rock engravings in the Karelian Republic were discovered in 1848 by the curator of the Museum of Mineralogy of St. Petersburg Konstantin Grevingk near the village of Besov We on the shore of Lake Onega.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Onega petroglyphs were studied by Swedish researcher Gustaf Hallström.

There are a number of extraordinary symbols reproduced in the rocks of Lake Onega.

In addition to circular and half-moon shaped signs with rays, among the Onega Symbols we can identify anthropomorphic figures, sometimes creatures that resemble moose wolfs, and images of so-called shaman canes, etc.

Almost half of all prints on Lake Onega are swans, ducks, and geese.

There are few scenes of human occupation.

The content of different accumulations of petroglyphs varies greatly, which is probably due to the age difference between the petroglyph groups, and changes in human occupation through the Neolithic period.

Curiously, at the end of August, from the end of Cape Besov we can sometimes see how a large reddish sunbeam gradually sets in, and on the opposite side, the bright, large and completely full moon rises.

Perhaps, similar phenomena that ancient man saw from the shores of Lake Onega served as an incentive to depict the circular and half-moon shapes that many scientists consider symbolic images of the sun and the moon.

When the sun sets on the horizon, the petroglyphs “disappear” right away.

We see an absolutely clean and lifeless stone surface.

This phenomenon, called by scientists “the effect of the prehistoric cinematograph,” even impresses anyone who witnesses it today.

The petroglyphs at Cape Besov feature a strange, two-meter-long “Demon petroglyph” as well as depictions of “Catfish,” and “Lizards”.

The curious depiction of the so-called “Demon” covers two stones which appear to e broken in half. Local legends suggest that it was there were ancient people performed a set of rituals and sacrifices more than 8,000 years ago and that supernatural beings were fed with blood that sipped into the crack between the stones, separating the image in half.

The ‘Demon’ petroglyph caused outrage among monks in the 15th century. The monks decided one day to carve a massive cross next to the ancient petroglyph, as a sign of fighting evil ‘spirits’.

A message to the gods? Massive Geoglyphs around the world that can only be seen from above

Geoglyphs are figures and/or symbols built on hillsides or plains, using different techniques like adding stones with dark tones of volcanic origin as a mosaic, to contrast on a lighter background characteristic of deserts, or removing the surface layer of the ground, usually darker due to oxidation, to make the lighter background visible.

This type of representation is found all over the world, but some of the most famous geoglyphs are located in South America.

We have the geoglyphs of Nazca (Peru), the Amazonian geoglyphs in Acre, Rondonia (Brazil) and the geoglyphs of Chug-Chug in the Atacama Desert (Chile), an area that contains some of the most significant quantities of geoglyphs in the world, as well as some of the oldest, ever found.

But these mysterious structures/etchings are not limited only to the countries mentioned above.

Recently experts have found mysterious symbols created thousands of years ago In Saudi Arabia and even Jordan.

Some of these figures were identified using satellite images from space.

Here, we take a look at some of these incredible geoglyphs and ask, what was their purpose? And if they are meant to be seen only from above? Who were they made for?

Chiza Geoglyphs

Chiza Geoglyphs 01

The Chiza Geoglyphs are a series of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures created in the Cuesta de Chiza, Tarapacá Region, Chile. The geoglyphs are located in the middle of the Atacama Desert, on the edge of Route 5, 80 km south of Arica. As they are on the side of the mountain, they can be seen from the air but as well from the ground.

The Chiza Geoglyphs were created using black rocks placed on the sand, forming figures of humans, birds and other animals. It is presumed that they were created between the year 500 and 900 AD. In the 1980s, the archeologist Luis Briones restored them, a fact highly criticized by those who adhere to the natural degradation of things.

Steppe Geoglyphs

The Steppe Geoglyphs are some of the more recent symbols discovered on Earth.

The so-called steppe geoglyphs constitute a monumental set of images only visible from the air located in the steppes of Kazakhstan; they were identified for the first time in 2007 by Dmitry Dey, a Kazakh economist who loves archeology.

Using Google Earth, Dmitriy Dey discovered no less than 260 figures among mounds, ditches, and embankments arranged in five basic forms in the Turgai region of northern Kazakhstan.

The largest figure, called Ushtogaysky Square because it is near the village of Ushtogaysky, was created near a Neolithic site and consists of a giant square formed by 101 mounds whose vertices are joined by a diagonal cross inscribed in the square; it has an extension greater than the Pyramid of Cheops.

Another interesting figure is the so-called Cross of Koga, a swastika with three arms each topped by a horizontal line with opposite zigzag ends.

Archaeologists believe these designs may be related to the Mahandzhar culture, which flourished there between 7,000 and 5,000 BC. Researchers suggest that the oldest figures could have been used as solar observatories with a function similar to that of Stonehenge.

The Nazca Lines are perhaps the most famous of all geoglyphs found on Earth.

The Nazca lines are ancient geoglyphs found in the pampas of Jumana, in the Nazca desert, between the towns of Nazca and Palpa, in the department of Ica (Peru).

They are believed to have been created by the Nazca culture and are composed of several hundred figures ranging from simple designs such as lines to complex zoomorphic, fitomorphic and geometric figures that appear traced on the earth’s surface. The Nazca lines are best appreciated from the air.

Pintado Geoglyphs

The Pintado Geoglyphs are a series of geoglyphs located in the Pampa del Tamarugal, in the Tarapacá Region (Chile). They are located approximately 95 kilometers away from Iquique, in the commune of Pozo Almonte.

Representing different symbols and humanoid figures, these glyphs are also best appreciated when observed from the air.

The Structures of Saudi Arabia

Lava Dome and Gates
This picture of the lava dome that has gates on it was taken in the 1980s by Vic Camp. The taller lava dome behind it is called “Jabal Abyad” a name which means “white mountain” in Arabic. The lava domes are no longer active although in the past basalt lava poured from them.

The enigmatic symbols of Saudi Arabia have only been identified recently.

Around 400 mysterious stone structures, which according to experts, date back thousands of years, have been discovered in thanks to satellite images on Google Earth. Archaeologists believe that the ancient stone structures are around 7,000 years old. The smallest of these structures—gates—extends around 13 meters while the longest one stretches out for a staggering 518 meters in length.

The Chug-Chug Geoglyphs

Chug Chug

The Chug-Chug geoglyphs are a series of ancient symbols carved in the Atacama Desert in Chile.

The area near the geoglyphs is well-known archaeologically, as it features 23 archaeological sites, preserving nearly 500 geoglyphs distributed along old caravan routes between the oasis of Calama and Quillagua, the base of an extinct pre-Hispanic town.

Experts suggest that the odes Geoglyphs at Chug-Chug date back to 1000 BC, while most originated between 900 and 1550 AD. Just as the Nazca Lines, the geoglyphs of Chug-Chug include human figures, zoomorphic designs of animals such as birds and llamas and geometric figures like circles and rhombuses.

The Book of Thoth: A sacred ancient Egyptian book that offers unlimited knowledge

It is said that the Book of Thoth contains a number of spells, one of which allows the reader to understand the speech of animals, and one of which allows the reader to perceive the gods themselves. Legend says that he who read the contents of the book would obtain the means to decipher the secrets and master the earth, the sea, the air and the celestial bodies.

One of the most mysterious books to have ever been mentioned in the history of mankind is the Book of Thoth—a sacred and mysterious book of the ancient Egyptians, written by an ancient God.

According to historical records, the Book of Thot was a collection of ancient Egyptian texts which were written y Thoth—the ancient Egyptian god of writing and Knowledge.

They include numerous texts that were claimed to exist by ancient authors and a magical book that appears in an Egyptian work of fiction.

The Book of Thoth appears fragmented in diverse papyri, the majority pertaining to the second century of the Ptolemaic period.

The Book of Thoth is cited for the first time in the so-called Turis papyrus, published in Paris at the end of the eighteenth century, which describes a failed attempt to kill a pharaoh, using a series of spells taken from the Book of Thoth.

He Who Balances by Hbruton

*Note: Philip Coppens writes how the “Turis Papyrus, it does not exist but was probably derived from the well-known Turin Papyrus. The Turin Papyrus of Kings, also known as the Turin Canon, is a hieratic manuscript of the 19th dynasty of Egypt, listing the kings of Egypt from the earliest times to the reign of Ramses II (1279–13 BC), under whom it was written. Thus, not only does the Turis resemble the Turin in name, but also in date of origin.”

In addition, there are different versions, although the compilations have led to reconstruct a history common to all of them, basically a dialogue in which there are two interlocutors, the god Thot and a disciple who “aspires to know”, although there is another god, probably Osiris, who also speaks with the disciple.

The literary framework could be compared with the Greek hermetic texts, which also show dialogues between Hermes-Thot and his disciples; however, the presence of some texts prior to the first-century place it ahead of the first Greek hermetic philosophical texts.

The name of ‘Book of Thot’ has been applied to numerous texts.

Manetho—an ancient Egyptian priest—claimed that Thot had written 36.525 books, although some investigators like Seleukos affirm that they were around 20,000.

The fictional Book of Thoth appears in an ancient Egyptian story from the Ptolemaic period which speaks of a brave ancient Egyptian prince called Neferkaptah who decides to recover the Book of Thoth, hidden at the depths of the Nile.

The book, written by Thoth, is said to contain two spells, one of which allows the reader to understand the speech of animals, and one of which allows the reader to perceive the gods themselves.

“The Book is at Koptos in the middle of the river.
In the middle of the river is an iron box,
In the iron box is a bronze box,
In the bronze box is a keté-wood box,
In the keté-wood box is an ivory-and-ebony box,
In the ivory-and-ebony box is a silver box,
In the silver box is a gold box,
And in the gold box is the Book of Thoth.
Round about the great iron box are snakes and scorpions and all manner of crawling things, and above all, there is a snake which no man can kill. These are set to guard the Book of Thoth.” (Source)

The fictional Book of Thoth

Legend suggests that the book was originally hidden at the bottom of the Nile near Coptos, where it was locked inside a series of boxes guarded by serpents no man could kill.

The brave ancient Egyptian prince Neferkaptah decided to recover it. He fought the serpents and succeeded retrieving it, but in punishment for his theft from Thoth, the gods killed his wife Ahwere and son Merib.

Neferkaptah eventually committed suicide and was said to have been entombed along with the book.

Generations later, the story’s protagonist, Setne Khamwas (a character based on the historical prince Khaemwaset), manages to steal the book from Neferkaptah’s tomb despite fierce opposition from Neferkaptah’s ghost.

Setne eventually meets a beautiful woman who seduces him into killing his children and humiliating himself in front of the pharaoh.

He discovers that what he had seen was, in fact, an illusion put forth by Neferkaptah, and in fear of further retribution, Setne decides to return the book to Neferkaptah’s tomb.

At Neferkaptah’s request, Setne finds the bodies of Neferkaptah’s wife and son and buries them in Neferkaptah’s tomb, which is then sealed for eternity.

The story is meant to reflect the ancient Egyptian belief that the gods’ knowledge is not meant for ordinary humans to possess.

Fragments have been found in Berlin, Paris, Vienna, Florence, Copenhagen and New Haven.

It was believed that he who read the contents of the book would obtain the means to decipher and master secrets related to the earth, the sea, the air and the celestial bodies.

It also conferred the faculty of assimilating the language of animals, giving life back to the dead and acting on distant and nearby minds.

The church father Clement of Alexandria, in the sixth book of his work Stromata, mentions forty-two books used by ancient Egyptian priests that he says contain “the whole philosophy of the Egyptians”.

All these books, according to Clement, were written by Hermes (an ancient pre-existing Greek god that the Greeks likened to Thoth, claiming they were one and the same god, due to the fact they had similar qualities, i.e. both invented writing).

America: land of mermaids, giants, and dragons?

Among many breathtaking and meticulously engraved details, the map features a group of mermaids holding what appears to be a disk in the form of a UFO near Patagonia, a legendary land that was rumored to be the home of giants.

During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the lands of the Western Hemisphere were a complete and utter mystery.

After Christopher Columbus set foot in the New World—oh and he wasn’t the first European to do so—curious Europeans began to tell fantastic sagas about sea monsters, exotic wildlife, and strange civilizations.

In 1562, the Spanish cartographer Diego Gutiérrez and the Dutch engraver Hieronymous Cock made an attempt to create a detailed map of the Americas. It turned out to be a huge six-panel print.

It was published in Antwerp under the name ‘Americae sive quarte orbis partis nova et exactissima, Latin for The Americas, or A New and Precise Description of the Fourth Part of the World’.

While the minutely engraved map shows precise geographical features in many cases (the east coast of the Americas and the western coasts of Europe and Africa), it is also plagued by what mainstream scholars consider folklore.

You can find many of the legends and rumors about the New World that circulated at that time: sirens, hungry sea serpents, cannibals, erupting volcanoes in Mexico and a land of giants.

I wonder if all of them were just a myth?

Since most of the sixteenth-century European population was not able to read, maps were not just a navigation tool, but a popular medium for telling stories about specific places and ancient civilizations. They were practically considered something like a storytelling book.

Interestingly, the west coast of South America depicted on this ancient map seems particularly dangerous and mysterious.

We see a threatening whale that squeezes a defenseless ship, a dragon, a huge snake and a group of mermaids holding what appears to be a disk in the form of a UFO near Patagonia, a legendary land that was rumored to be the home of giants.

The region that is now part of Argentina and Chile was described by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan after encountering the indigenous Tehuelche tribe in 1520.

According to his accounts, the Tehuelches were very tall and must have seemed gigantic to Spaniards who were particularly ‘small’.

In order to prove that he really did encounter Giant beings in the new word, Magellan captured two Tehuelches and tried to bring them to Spain.

However, they did not survive the trip to Europe, and Magellan had nothing left but stories and myths of a land of giants.

The map is a mixture of reality and myth

Despite the fact that we see what is considered as fictitious material on the map, Gutiérrez and Cock also name settlements, rivers, mountains, and capes that really do exist.

It shows engravings of the Amazon River, Lake Titicaca, Mexico City, and the rivers in South America and Florida.

You can see numerous correct coastal features of South, Central, North and Caribbean America, which makes me wonder, why create such a weird blend?

Is there a chance that European explorers really encountered all of what was depicted on the map?
