Former Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid continues to call for leading with science when studying UFOs. Originally, he says he \u201cnever intended to prove that life beyond Earth exists.\u201d However, he has \u201cno problem with that,\u201d if the science proves otherwise.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As a June UAP report is due in days, Reid wrote in\u00a0the New York Times,<\/em>\u00a0<\/a>\u201cWe still don\u2019t know what they are, but we may be close to finding out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, other former government officials indicate we could be far from finding out. Recently, reports from former and\u00a0current government officials\u00a0<\/a>suggest \u201cmilitary and spy agencies are blocking or simply ignoring the effort to compile a report.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harry Reid On Visiting Area 51<\/h2>\n

As a senator, Reid says he\u00a0visited Area 51, t<\/a>he top-secret Air Force testing site in southern Nevada.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWhat I saw fascinated me, though much of it must remain classified,\u201d Reid wrote. \u201cDuring one visit, I traveled a short distance to the facility that housed the Air Force\u2019s secret new stealth fighters. For security reasons, the pilots could fly them only at night \u2014 under the same Nevada stars I had gazed upon as a boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Then, suggested the existence of Area 51 should have remained classified until 2013.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThough Area 51 was developed decades ago, during the height of the Cold War, its existence wasn\u2019t publicly acknowledged by the US government until 2013. To do so earlier would have been detrimental to our security as a nation, given that our government constantly balances the competing priorities of secrecy and transparency in a democracy,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Recently, Reid suggested that Lockheed Martin might have fragments of UFOs, but he has never seen proof.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI was told for decades that Lockheed had some of these retrieved materials,\u201d the Democrat told the\u00a0New Yorker.<\/em><\/a>\u00a0\u201cAnd I tried to get, as I recall, a classified approval by the Pentagon to have me go look at the stuff. They would not approve that. I don\u2019t know what all the numbers were, what kind of classification it was, but they would not give that to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Harry Reid and AATIP<\/h2>\n

At the same time, Reid realized that the \u201cunofficial taboo\u201d of UFO discussions could actually harm national security. Furthermore, it could inhibit technical advancement as other countries openly study the phenomena.<\/p>\n

Consequently, he decided to create AATIP with two other senators, Stevens and Inouye, focusing on science.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI believe that there is information uncovered by the government\u2019s covert investigations into unidentified aerial phenomena that can be disclosed to the public without harming our national security,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In 2007, Harry Reid requested funding for the self-described \u201cclandestine Pentagon operation\u201d the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program. Although his staff warned him to \u201cstay the hell away from\u201d the UFO subject, he says he\u00a0\u201cpolitely ignored\u201d<\/a>\u00a0them.<\/p>\n

Although the program officially ended in 2012, UFO studies carry on in the\u00a0Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force<\/a>\u00a0today.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What Inspired Harry Reid<\/h2>\n

In the\u00a0Times,<\/em>\u00a0Reid says he became more interested in UFOs after\u00a0journalist George Knapp<\/a>\u00a0invited him to a UFO conference in 1996. There, he was impressed with the academic and scientific approach. Rather than focusing on aliens, they focused on \u201ctechnological advancement and national security.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the experience, Reid became \u201chooked,\u201d and his interest grew after conversations with former astronaut and then-senator from Ohio,\u00a0John Glenn. <\/a>He was the first American to orbit Earth.<\/p>\n

Notably,\u00a0Glenn reported\u00a0<\/a>seeing UFOs and \u201cfireflies\u201d himself. Later, reports\u00a0attributed the fireflies <\/a>to vapors\u00a0vented from his body and the spacecraft.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Leading UFO Research with Science<\/h2>\n

When he was a younger man, Reid believed that leading with science was the best way to approach UFOs. Today, he believes it\u2019s crucial.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI believe it\u2019s crucial to lead with the science when studying UFOs. Focusing on little green men or conspiracy theories won\u2019t get us far.\u00a0<\/strong>Of course, whatever the science tells us, some portion of the public will continue to believe in the reality of otherworldly UFOs as a matter of faith. Ultimately, the UFO debate can be broken down into a sincere belief in science versus a sincere belief in extraterrestrials. I side with science.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

To date, he says, \u201cthere\u2019s still a great deal we don\u2019t understand\u201d about the phenomenon. Thus, he isn\u2019t sure if the aircraft are of extraterrestrial origin, or made by other countries. On the other hand, some reports could be due to distorted visual perception.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, he remains open-minded. In the past, he has indicated a belief in the probability of extraterrestrial life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look at it this way,\u201d\u00a0Reid said<\/a>\u00a0in an interview with\u00a0Motherboard<\/em>\u00a0in 2020.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe world as we know it today is extremely large. It\u2019s so big I can\u2019t comprehend it. And I think that we as human beings have to be a little short-sighted if we think we\u2019re the only species in the entire universe. In the entire universe, there is for sure more than one [species].\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Robert Bigelow and Skinwalker Ranch<\/h2>\n

In 2017,\u00a0the\u00a0Times<\/em>\u00a0revealed\u00a0<\/a>AATIP, the \u201cmysterious UFO program,\u201d existed and was funded for $22 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Much of the money went to Reid\u2019s longtime friend, conservative Republican\u00a0Robert Bigelow<\/a>, who also worked with NASA to \u201cproduce expandable craft for humans to use in space.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Further, the Las Vegas real estate and Bigelow Aerospace mogul financed ventures with funds from Budget Suites rentals. According to George Knapp, Bigelow may have spent more on UFO research than \u201cany person in history.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 1996, Bigelow purchased the 480-acre Skinwalker Ranch. The place earned its nickname \u201cfor the shape-shifting witches of Navajo legend.\u201d Before Bigelow arrived, the former owners, Terry and Gwen Sherman said they witnessed three types of UFOs<\/a> and saw mutilated cattle.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Vice,<\/em>\u00a0much of AATIP\u2019s research took place\u00a0at the ranch,\u00a0<\/a>a paranormal hotspot in Utah. However, Reid says he never visited the location.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t feel that it was appropriate for the government to take me,\u201d Reid said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Appearing on 60 Minutes, Bigelow said he remains \u201cabsolutely convinced\u201d that aliens have visited Earth in UFOs.<\/p>\n

Ongoing Stigma and Taboo\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Today, the former AATIP leader, Lue Elizondo, and former Pentagon intelligence official Christopher Mellon suggest UAPTF faces many hurdles.<\/p>\n

For instance, Mellon stated that the Air Force \u201cstiff-armed\u201d the task force from obtaining information. On the other hand, Elizondo cites enormous resistance from government bureaucracy.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cYou have all the stigma and the taboo that is associated with it,\u201d said Elizondo, who serves as an informal adviser to the military. \u201cOrganizations whose mission this might fall squarely into are resisting adopting this mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Although public interest is great and the stigma about the subject has lifted, that may not be the case inside the government.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been so much public taboo about this for decades that no one wants to risk their professional careers and that of their bosses on a topic like this without being directed,\u201d Elizondo said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Mellon, who served in the administrations of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, says lifting taboo may require direct involvement by senior executive branch officials \u2013and more time.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cMy hope is that this administration will provide our military people the support they deserve,\u201d Mellon told\u00a0NBC News<\/em><\/a>. \u201cOn this issue, that means determining ASAP what threat if any is posed by the unidentified vehicles that are brazenly and repeatedly violating restricted US airspace over hovering around our warships. Our people are naturally and rightly concerned and almost nothing has been done to address their concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The American People Deserve to Know<\/h2>\n

Today, Harry Reid, now 81, hopes the upcoming UAP report will give Americans more answers.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe American people deserve to know more \u2014 and hopefully they will soon,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In 2020, Reid said he thought it would be \u201ca really unfortunate thing for the country\u201d if the government stopped working on UFOs considering \u201cother countries are doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Elizondo thinks the UAP report should be delayed. With more time and financing, it could reveal more facts instead of serving merely as more evidence of ongoing coverup.<\/p>\n
