It is thought the images were created before the Spanish conquistadors arrived, but were incorporated into the walls of the tunnel when it was built centuries later. That means they were likely created by the Aztecs, an empire famed for their beautiful\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/editors-blog\/ancient-aztec-temple-and-sacrificial-ball-court-discovered-in-mexico-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temples<\/a>, hieroglyphic writing system, and gruesome penchant for\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/editors-blog\/bizarre-child-sacrifice-confirms-the-aztecs-were-terrifyingly-badass-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sacrificing children<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44502\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44502\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-44502 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/bird-of-prey.jpg\" alt=\"bird of prey\" width=\"800\" height=\"582\" title=\"Mysterious Aztec carvings found in tunnel beneath Mexico City 1\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44502\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The head of a bird of prey drawn on the rock in the Mexico City tunnel (Via <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inah.gob.mx\/boletines\/8589-inah-descubre-tunel-virreinal-con-glifos-prehispanicos-en-el-albarradon-de-ecatepec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">INAH<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Among the most interesting of the images were \u201cthe carvings of a\u00a0<em>chimalli<\/em> or war shield \u2026 the head of a bird of prey, a flint point and an element that archaeologist Alfonso Caso identified as (a) \u2018paper ornament.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<h5>Empire of the Aztecs<\/h5>\n<p>In the 15th century, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/editors-blog\/archaeologists-uncover-17thcentury-mexican-tunnel-decorated-with-mysterious-aztec-carvings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to historians and archaeologists<\/a>, the Aztec emperor Moctezuma I decreed construction of a dike system in what is now <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/researchers-find-thousand-year-old-pyramid-city-in-the-heart-of-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mexico City<\/a> for the purpose of controlling flooding from lakes in the area around what is now the capital of Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>However, shortly after construction began, Spanish conquistador Hern\u00e1n Cort\u00e9s arrived with troops and decimated the Aztec empire, destroying what had been built of the dike system, which lay dormant until it was rebuilt in the 17th century. Today, the system is known as the Albarradon de Ecatepec.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44509\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44509\" style=\"width: 1100px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-44509 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/extra_large-1572534669-cover-image.jpg\" alt=\"extra large 1572534669 cover image\" width=\"1100\" height=\"619\" title=\"Mysterious Aztec carvings found in tunnel beneath Mexico City 2\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44509\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The arch of the tunnel, which is adorned with various Aztec carvings (Via INAH)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h5>Recycling the Past<\/h5>\n<p>So how exactly did the ancient Aztec carvings wind up being a part of a water system built three centuries after the Aztec empire was destroyed? By repurposing stone that had been put in place by Aztec workmen some 300 years earlier:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe stone used in the initial construction was likely repurposed when the dikes were rebuilt, explaining the Aztec symbols etched into the sides of the tunnel. They also found four iron nails and two 21-foot-long (6.5 m) wooden beams.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44518\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44518\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-44518 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-195.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot 195\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" title=\"Mysterious Aztec carvings found in tunnel beneath Mexico City 6\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44518\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Aztecs made countless drawings that have been discovered centuries later (Via <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=374&amp;v=lrWr661wa_U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h5>A Massive Construction Project<\/h5>\n<p>When the Albarradon de Ecatepec was built, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/17th-century-tunnel-discovered-mexico.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it took years<\/a> and the labor of thousands of native people:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThree thousand indigenous people are thought to have constructed this dike under the supervision of the Spanish friars Jeronimo de Aguilar and Juan de Torquemada, Ch\u00e1vez said.
