{"id":3923715,"date":"2026-01-29T09:08:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T14:08:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikedyess.info\/para\/stone-circle-dating-to-the-bronze-age-found-hidden-in-british-forest\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T09:08:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T14:08:19","slug":"stone-circle-dating-to-the-bronze-age-found-hidden-in-british-forest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mikedyess.info\/para\/stone-circle-dating-to-the-bronze-age-found-hidden-in-british-forest\/","title":{"rendered":"Stone circle dating to the Bronze Age found hidden in British forest"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>A British archaeologist recently made an incredible discovery in a forest: A 4.000-year-old stone circle, the first of its kind found in Gloucestershire, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-7635543\/Bronze-Age-monument-discovered-Forest-Dean-ritual-BURIAL-ground.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the <em>Daily Mail<\/em> reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201cA \u2018very significant\u2019 discovery of a Bronze Age monument has been uncovered after being hidden under foliage in the Forest of Dean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201cDating back to about 2,000 BC the circular ritual ring was found during a LiDAR laser scan of the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201cThe findings, known as a ring cairn, consist of a circular bank with limestone standing stones.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44449\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44449\" style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-44449 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-183.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot 183\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" title=\"Stone circle dating to the Bronze Age found hidden in British forest 1\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44449\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the stones discovered in Gloucestershire (Via the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-gloucestershire-50208092\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The discovery was made by Jon Hoyle, an archaeologist, who studied a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) scan of the woodlands and found something he wasn\u2019t expecting. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-7635543\/Bronze-Age-monument-discovered-Forest-Dean-ritual-BURIAL-ground.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hoyle recalls<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt was very exciting. I was expecting to find quite a lot of new sites with the LiDAR, but nothing as interesting as this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44450\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44450\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-44450 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/ring-cairn.jpg\" alt=\"ring cairn\" width=\"775\" height=\"436\" title=\"Stone circle dating to the Bronze Age found hidden in British forest 2\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44450\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The ring cairn can be seen here on the LiDAR scan (Via Forestry Commission)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hoyle originally though the circle he saw on the scan might be a World War II gun emplacement, but when he went to the location of the object, he knew he had been wrong. Instead, he had just located a magnificent example of a stone circle.<\/p>\n<h5>Purpose of Stone Circles<\/h5>\n<p>Though stone circles have been found all over the United Kingdom over the decades, they remain a mystery in many ways.<\/p>\n<p>For example: What purpose did they serve? Hoyle <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-7635543\/Bronze-Age-monument-discovered-Forest-Dean-ritual-BURIAL-ground.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">admits that\u2019s not clear<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cNobody knows precisely what they were used for. Some have been found in association with burials, and often there appear to be residues of charcoal in places like this, suggesting rituals that involved fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44445\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44445\" style=\"width: 1051px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-44445 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/stone-circle.jpg\" alt=\"stone circle\" width=\"1051\" height=\"700\" title=\"Stone circle dating to the Bronze Age found hidden in British forest 3\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The stone circle looked something like this about 4,000 years ago (Via <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-gloucestershire-50208092\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC\/Anne Leaver<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h5>Smaller Than Stonehenge<\/h5>\n<p>The stone circle is much smaller than other more well-known cairns such as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/5000-year-old-megaliths-reminiscent-of-stonehenge-found-after-waters-recede-in-spain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stonehenge<\/a>, but a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/tech\/10249114\/bronze-age-stone-circle-discovered-gloucestershire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">description of it<\/a> from <em>The Sun<\/em> and video of the site provide ample evidence that the site is indeed a major find when it comes to better understanding ancient history and the beliefs of those who came thousands of years before us:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201c\u2018The Gloucestershire ring cairn is about 80 feet wide and the circle rubble bank around it is 16 feet thick.\u2019 About 10 white limestone standing stones that are covered with vegetation are located on the ring. They are roughly three feet (one meter).\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44446\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44446\" style=\"width: 843px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-44446 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/exact-location.jpg\" alt=\"exact location\" width=\"843\" height=\"474\" title=\"Stone circle dating to the Bronze Age found hidden in British forest 4\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44446\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The exact location of the stone circle in the Forest of Dean is a secret to ensure that it does not attract the attention of looters and illegal treasure hunters (Via Jon Hoyle)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While Hoyle noted that he and many other researchers remain uncertain the full purpose of stone circles, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/earth\/story\/20161012-the-strange-origin-of-scotlands-stone-circles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">others believe<\/a> they may have played a more \u201ccosmic\u201d role:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOne group of researchers claim to have the answer. They have found evidence that these stone circles were erected with cosmic influences: that is, they were placed specifically to better see the Sun, the Moon and the stars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn academic called Alexander Thom spent several decades studying Britain\u2019s standing stones, starting in the 1930s. Due to their geometric accuracy, and despite the fact that the stones were made up of various shapes, Thom proposed that standing stones served as observatories: places to best watch the stars.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44452\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44452\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-44452 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/1071477228_53f3be6750_c.jpg\" alt=\"1071477228 53f3be6750 c\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" title=\"Stone circle dating to the Bronze Age found hidden in British forest 5\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stonehenge is the most well-known cairn in the world (Via <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/garethwiscombe\/1071477228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flickr<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, \u00a0Kenneth Brophy of the University of Glasgow in Scotland disagrees with imparting the structures with such motives, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/earth\/story\/20161012-the-strange-origin-of-scotlands-stone-circles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noting<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a very modern way of looking at the world.We have to understand them through power structures in society, rather than emphasising arcane mathematical measurements. There\u2019s nothing we can see in prehistoric people in other walks of life that suggests they had this highly mathematical view of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And Gordon Noble of the University of Aberdeen <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/earth\/story\/20161012-the-strange-origin-of-scotlands-stone-circles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">calls stone circles<\/a> houses for the departed:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re essentially very large houses for the dead and spirits.
