It\u2019s one of the most well-known stories from the Bible: Noah and his family were instructed by God to build an ark and load it with two of every animal. Noah did as he was instructed and the great flood came, destroying everything except Noah, his family, and the animals on the ark.<\/p>\n

But did the great flood actually happen, or is the story of Noah just a myth?<\/p>\n

The recent discovery in the Black Sea<\/a> of a ancient ship graveyard may finally provide an answer to the mystery of Noah\u2019s Ark, according to a fascinating article<\/a> from Ancient Origins.<\/em><\/p>\n

Mapping the Sea Floor<\/h5>\n

Maritime archaeologist, Zdravka Georgieva, along with a team of scientists from Bulgaria\u2019s Center for Underwater Archaeology, in partnership with Professor Jon Adams from the University of Southampton, mapped the floor of the Black Sea using sonar technology and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). The researchers happened upon a startling site: A Greek trading ship that turned out to be the oldest of its kind ever discovered.<\/p>\n

At depths such as those the team was exploring, we know some facts<\/a> with absolute certainty:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is so little oxygen that the timbers have hardly decayed and that some of these ancient boats\u00a0<\/a>are in such\u00a0good condition\u00a0<\/a>that \u2018individual chisel marks\u2019 appear on the planks of the hulls. According to both the BBC and The Sun,<\/a><\/em>\u00a0further studies might help explain the origins of the biblical\u00a0flood<\/a>\u00a0that was sent by\u00a0God<\/a>\u00a0to wipe out corruption and violence in the story of\u00a0Noah\u2019s Ark.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Marine geologists William Ryan and Walter Pitman published a book in 2000 entitled Noah\u2019s Flood<\/em> in which they suggested that the real flood which may have\u00a0inspired the story of the Biblical flood occurred about 20,000 years ago and took place in the Black Sea:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Black Sea was a small freshwater lake cut off from the Mediterranean<\/a>\u00a0by a land bridge. At the end of the last\u00a0Ice Age, according to the authors, the Mediterranean began to rise and a seawater deluge<\/a> \u2018200 times stronger than Niagara Falls\u2019 causing the Black Sea to \u2018explode\u2019 in size, flooding an area \u2018the size of Ireland<\/a> within months.’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

That theory, while intriguing, has more than its share of critics, many of whom say such a scenario is highly unlikely. But some evidence<\/a> found on land does support the idea of a Black Sea flood that might have been seen as a sign from God:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe foundations of ancient buildings were found along the Black Sea\u2019s pre-flood shoreline, 12 miles (19.3 kilometers) off the Turkish<\/a> Black Sea coast, somewhat adding credence to this idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

No Such Flood?<\/h5>\n

A closer look at the facts, however, and the Black Sea flood\/Biblical flood theory falls apart. As a matter of fact, there\u2019s even a very good likelihood that no flood of such proportions ever occurred.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to the scientists from Black Sea MAP, they \u2018don\u2019t believe\u2019 any such flood happened. Dr. Zdravka Georgieva said very clearly \u2018there\u2019s no evidence to support this theory and believes that the seas changed over great periods of time.’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

As intriguing as the story of Noah\u2019s Ark is, it appears to be little more than a story (Via Flickr<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Perhaps the best scientific proof<\/a> that a worldwide flood never happened can be found in what are known as \u201craindrop prints,\u201d which record the rain that has fallen over the Earth\u2019s history because they\u2019re preserved in fossils:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich could not possibly have been formed and preserved if the muds (now in shales) containing these prints were deposited under water during Noah\u2019s flood, there are rain drops, trillions of them, each one\u2019s geological story shadowed by a legend in the Bible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Noah\u2019s Ark is a good myth that doesn\u2019t stand up to scientific scrutiny, but its larger message may be more important now than it was when it was first written: We are expected to be stewards of the planet and the life that exists upon it. That lesson never gets old.<\/p>\n
