Others claim it is a symbolic burial of men lost at sea. One of the most intriguing theories is that the coffins were made in a kindly attempt to quiet the wandering souls of 17 people who were murdered for the dissection table by the notorious\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/history-famous-people\/10-ancient-serial-killers-foreshadowed-jack-ripper-009095\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">serial killers\u00a0<\/a>Burke and Hare.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43306\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43306\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43306 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/coffinsfeatured.jpg\" alt=\"coffinsfeatured\" width=\"1200\" height=\"630\" title=\"200-Year-Old Miniature Coffins Found In Scotland Confound Researchers 1\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43306\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The remaining miniature coffins first discovered in 1836 (Via <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nms.ac.uk\/explore-our-collections\/stories\/scottish-history-and-archaeology\/mystery-of-the-miniature-coffins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Museums Scotland<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Only eight of the tiny coffins survive to this day, and they are on permanent display at the National Museum of Scotland.<\/p>\n<h5>Intricate Little Gems<\/h5>\n<p><em>The Scotsman<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/unexplained-phenomena\/witchcraft-tributes-murder-victims-uncertain-origins-17-miniature-coffins-021217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">describes the little coffins<\/a> as containing \u201ca miniature figure of the human form cut out in wood, the faces in particular being pretty well executed. They were dressed from head to foot in cotton clothes, and decently laid out with a mimic representation of all the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/history-ancient-traditions\/roman-funerals-021976\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">funeral<\/a> trappings which usually form the last habiliments of the dead.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe coffins are about three or four inches in length, regularly shaped, and cut out from a single piece of wood, with the exception of the lids, which are nailed down with wire sprigs or common brass pins. Why would anyone make such things? They weren\u2019t meant to be toys for children (were they?!) and they serve no real purpose, so why even construct such things in the first place?<\/p>\n<p>To answer the linger question, we have to travel back to when the coffins were created and see what was happening at that time in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>For one thing, Scotland was becoming a center of great medical expertise, and its medical schools were training doctors, which led to a huge increase in enrollment.<\/p>\n<p>Those studying anatomy needed bodies to dissect and examine, and that led to a dramatic increase in grave robbing:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAmong the most devious body snatchers in history were <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/ancient-places-europe\/body-snatchers-and-tortured-spirits-dark-history-south-bridge-vaults-edinburgh-020481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Burke and William Hare,<\/a>\u00a0both Irish immigrants, as well as the famous Edinburgh anatomist and scholar Dr. Robert Knox. As a once-popular children\u2019s rhyme retells, \u201cUp the close and doun the stair\/ But and ben wi\u2019 Burke and Hare. Burke\u2019s the butcher, Hare\u2019s the thief\/ Knox the boy that buys the beef.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43322\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43322\" style=\"width: 528px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43322 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Portraits_1.jpg\" alt=\"Portraits 1\" width=\"528\" height=\"700\" title=\"200-Year-Old Miniature Coffins Found In Scotland Confound Researchers 4\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43322\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Portraits of William Burke, William Hare, and Dr. Robert Knox (Public Domain)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But even the graveyards failed to provide enough bodies, and with authorities on close watch to make sure more graves weren\u2019t robbed, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/unexplained-phenomena\/witchcraft-tributes-murder-victims-uncertain-origins-17-miniature-coffins-021217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Burke and Hare reportedly<\/a> began dispatching victims via murder so they could continue to make bank by providing fresh bodies to local medical schools:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAnd so began a vicious killing spree that lasted 10 months, during which Burke and Hare dispatched at least 16 victims [12 of whom were female] and earned around \u00a3150 (roughly \u00a312,000 now \u2013 no mean sum).\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>YouTube Video Here: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SfW4ULXtRFk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SfW4ULXtRFk<\/a><\/p>\n<h5>A Second Theory<\/h5>\n<p>Some say the coffins have nothing to do with Burke, Hare, and serial killings. Instead, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scotsman.com\/lifestyle-2-15039\/author-claims-to-have-solved-edinburgh-coffin-doll-mystery-1-4726323\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they maintain<\/a>, they were created to commemorate those who had been killed in the Radical War of 1820:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAuthor and amateur historian Jeff Nisbet believes the miniature coffins were created to keep the \u2018flames of rebellion lit\u2019 following the Radical war of 1820.
