Image Credit: Wikimedia Commons.\u00a0<a class=\"mw-mmv-license\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:The_Celestial_Chariot_(6124515635).jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Domain<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In this article, we take a look at the Vimana, more specifically, the ancient Pushpaka Vimana, a powerful ancient flying vehicle described in\u00a0Hindu texts\u00a0and\u00a0Sanskrit epics.<\/p>\n<p>The Pushpaka Vimana of king\u00a0Ravana\u00a0(who captured the Vimana from Lord\u00a0Kubera; and Rama returned it to Kubera) is the most quoted example of a vimana.<\/p>\n<p>Vimanas are also mentioned in\u00a0Jain texts\u2014Jainism, an ancient\u00a0Indian religion.<\/p>\n<p>If we take a look at ancient Sanskrit and the etymology of the Vimana, we will find that it means \u201cmeasuring out, traversing\u201d or \u201chaving been measured out\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Reference to the ancient Vimana can be found in the Mahabharata, which is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAt Rama`s behest, the magnificent chariot rose up to a mountain of cloud with a tremendous din. Another passage reads: Bhima flew with his Vimana on an enormous ray which was as brilliant as the sun and made a noise like the thunder of a storm.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Author <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monier_Monier-Williams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monier Monier-Williams<\/a><\/strong>\u2014the second\u00a0Boden Professor of Sanskrit\u00a0at\u00a0Oxford University describes the Ancient Vimana as \u201ca car or a chariot of the gods, any self-moving aerial car sometimes serving as a seat or throne, sometimes self-moving and carrying its occupant through the air; other descriptions make the Vimana more like a house or palace, and one kind is said to be seven stories high,\u201d quoting the Pushpaka Vimana as one of the most worthy examples.<\/p>\n<p>In modern languages, Vimana is usually translated to aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>In many depictions of Vimana, we see these powerful, alleged machines, depicted as being as big as a temple.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35711\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35711\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35711\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Vimana-Temple.jpg\" alt=\"Sculpture of the Pushpaka vimana\" width=\"1000\" height=\"839\" title=\"The Vimana Pushpaka\u2014An Ancient Flying Vehicle That is Described Traveling to Space 2\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35711\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Sculpture of the Pushpaka Vimana, as a temple flying in the sky. Image Credit: Wikimedia Commons.<a class=\"mw-mmv-license\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CC BY-SA 4.0<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Vimana predecessor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In ancient Sanskrit Epics, the Vimana were the so-called flying chariots used by a number of different ancient Gods.<\/p>\n<p>Various Vedic deities are described as using, flying, wheeled chariots to move from one place to another.<\/p>\n<p>Some verses of ancient texts have been interpreted by different authors as evidence of \u2018mechanical birds\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In the Rigveda (an ancient Indian collection of Vedic Sanskrit hymns), for example, we find the following description:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDark the descent: the birds are golden-coloured; up to the heaven they fly robed in the waters. Again, descend they from the seat of Order, and all the earth is moistened with their fatness. Twelve are the fellies, and the wheel is single; three are the naves. What man hath understood it? Therein are set together spokes three hundred and sixty, which in nowise can be loosened.\u201d\u2014<strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/hymnsrigveda02grifgoog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hymns of the Rigveda by Ralph Thomas Hotchkin Griffith<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Swami Dayananda Saraswati\u2014 a renowned scholar of the Vedic lore and Sanskrit language\u2014the ancient Vimana were powerful spacecraft:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cjumping into space speedily with a craft using fire and water \u2026 containing twelve stamghas (pillars), one wheel, three machines, 300 pivots, and 60 instruments.\u201d\u2014<strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cgpl.iisc.ernet.in\/site\/Portals\/0\/Publications\/ReferedJournal\/ACriticalStudyOfTheWorkVaimanikaShastra.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A critical study of the work \u201cvymanika shastra\u201d<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Pushpaka Vimana<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Pushpaka Vimana\u00a0is usually described as a mythological flying palace or chariot.<\/p>\n<p>In the Ramayana, we find another extraordinary description of the Vimana, more specifically the Pushpaka Vimana:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Pushpaka Vimana that resembles the Sun and belongs to my brother was brought by the powerful Ravana; that aerial and excellent Vimana going everywhere at will \u2026 that chariot resembling a bright cloud in the sky \u2026 and the King [Rama] got in, and the excellent chariot at the command of the Raghira, rose up into the higher atmosphere.&#8217;\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Pushpaka Vimana appears as the first flying vimana mentioned in existing\u00a0Hindu\u00a0texts. The powerful Pushpaka Vimana was built e by\u00a0Vishwakarma\u00a0for\u00a0Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. This Vimana was later given by Brahma to Kubera, the God of wealth.
