{"id":3922100,"date":"2025-09-25T09:03:01","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T14:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mikedyess.info\/para\/the-onega-petroglyphs-depictions-of-sky-beings-from-6000-bc\/"},"modified":"2025-09-25T09:03:01","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T14:03:01","slug":"the-onega-petroglyphs-depictions-of-sky-beings-from-6000-bc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mikedyess.info\/para\/the-onega-petroglyphs-depictions-of-sky-beings-from-6000-bc\/","title":{"rendered":"The Onega Petroglyphs: Depictions of sky beings from 6,000 BC?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>The Onega petroglyphs are rock engravings located on the east coast of Lake Onega in the northwest of Russia.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>According to reports, the thousands of petroglyphs date back to around 5,000\u20146,000 BC.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Experts have identified around 1,200 petroglyphs scattered in an area of 20 km, including several capes, such as Besov Nos, which features the mysterious \u2018Demon petroglyph\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The engravings are 1-2 mm deep and represent animals, people, boats and geometric shapes, such as circular and half-moon symbols, but also what some authors even suggest may be representations of constellations.<\/p>\n<p>The Onega Petroglyphs\u2014located in the Karelian Republic\u2014are considered as the most complex and expressive rock art examples in northern Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The enigmatic figures etched in rock on the shores of Lake Onega feature countless ancient symbols that depict religious, and ritual scenes, as well as warfare and everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>The first rock engravings in the Karelian Republic were discovered in 1848 by the curator of the Museum of Mineralogy of St. Petersburg Konstantin Grevingk near the village of <em>Besov We<\/em> on the shore of Lake Onega.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of the 20th century, the Onega petroglyphs were studied by Swedish researcher Gustaf Hallstr\u00f6m.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26872\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26872\" style=\"width: 905px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26872 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Onega-Petroglyphs.jpg\" alt=\"Onega Petroglyphs\" width=\"905\" height=\"625\" title=\"The Onega Petroglyphs: Depictions of sky beings from 6,000 BC? 1\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26872\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>The petroglyphs near Lake Onega. Image Credit: Shutterstock<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are a number of extraordinary symbols reproduced in the rocks of Lake Onega.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to circular and half-moon shaped signs with rays, among the Onega Symbols we can identify anthropomorphic figures, sometimes creatures that resemble moose wolfs, and images of so-called shaman canes, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Almost half of all prints on Lake Onega are swans, ducks, and geese.<\/p>\n<p>There are few scenes of human occupation.<\/p>\n<p>The content of different accumulations of petroglyphs varies greatly, which is probably due to the age difference between the petroglyph groups, and changes in human occupation through the Neolithic period.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26875\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26875\" style=\"width: 905px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26875\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Lake-Onega-Petroglyph.jpg\" alt=\"Lake Onega Petroglyph\" width=\"905\" height=\"905\" title=\"The Onega Petroglyphs: Depictions of sky beings from 6,000 BC? 2\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26875\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Another incredible view of the petroglyphs at Lake Onega. Image Credit: Shutterstock<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Curiously, at the end of August, from the end of Cape Besov we can sometimes see how a large reddish sunbeam gradually sets in, and on the opposite side, the bright, large and completely full moon rises.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps, similar phenomena that ancient man saw from the shores of Lake Onega served as an incentive to depict the circular and half-moon shapes that many scientists consider symbolic images of the sun and the moon.<\/p>\n<p>When the sun sets on the horizon, the petroglyphs \u201cdisappear\u201d right away.<\/p>\n<p>We see an absolutely clean and lifeless stone surface.<\/p>\n<p>This phenomenon, called by scientists \u201cthe effect of the prehistoric cinematograph,\u201d even impresses anyone who witnesses it today.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">The \u2018Demon petroglyph\u2019 of\u00a0Besov Nos<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26873\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26873\" style=\"width: 905px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26873 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Onega-Petroglyph-1.jpg\" alt=\"Onega Petroglyph 1\" width=\"905\" height=\"603\" title=\"The Onega Petroglyphs: Depictions of sky beings from 6,000 BC? 3\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26873\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>The so-called \u2018Demon\u2019 petroglyph at Cape Besov. Image Credit: Shutterstock<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The petroglyphs\u00a0at\u00a0Cape Besov feature a strange, two-meter-long \u201cDemon petroglyph\u201d as well as depictions of \u201cCatfish,\u201d and \u201cLizards\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The curious depiction of the so-called \u201cDemon\u201d covers two stones which appear to e broken in half.
