{"id":3922084,"date":"2025-09-23T09:04:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T14:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikedyess.info\/para\/the-greek-pyramid-of-hellinikon-predates-the-oldest-ancient-egyptian-pyramid\/"},"modified":"2025-09-23T09:04:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T14:04:13","slug":"the-greek-pyramid-of-hellinikon-predates-the-oldest-ancient-egyptian-pyramid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mikedyess.info\/para\/the-greek-pyramid-of-hellinikon-predates-the-oldest-ancient-egyptian-pyramid\/","title":{"rendered":"The Greek Pyramid of Hellinikon predates the oldest ancient Egyptian Pyramid"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>While many are unaware of this, there is a Pyramid (now in ruins) in Greece referred to as the \u2018Pyramid of Hellinikon \u2018 which according to studies\u00a0is older than the oldest Pyramid of ancient Egypt by at least 100 years (Djoser \u2013 2620 B.C.) and predates by at least 170 years, the Great Pyramid Giza (Khufu \u2013 2550 B.C.).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whenever we hear the word \u2018Pyramid\u2019 we always jump in our minds to ancient Egypt, and their supermassive, majestic Pyramids.<\/p>\n<p>However, despite the fact that Egypt is well-known for its three main pyramids at the Giza plateau, the truth is that there are thousands of pyramids scattered across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>There are pyramids nearly on every continent on Earth. There are pyramids in America, in Europe, in Asia, and even in India.<\/p>\n<p>And curiously, one of the European pyramids is located in Greece and is known as the pyramid of Hellenikon in Argos, Greece.<\/p>\n<p>The Pyramid of Greece (now in ruins) was well described in ancient times and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pausanias_(geographer)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Pausanias<\/strong><\/a>\u2014a Greek traveler and geographer of the 2nd century AD, who lived in the time of Roman emperors Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius\u2014documented the structure in his\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.perseus.tufts.edu\/hopper\/text?doc=Perseus:text:1999.01.0160:book=2:chapter=25&amp;highlight=pyramid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Description of Greece<\/strong><\/a>, referring to it as the Pyramid of Hellinikon close to Argos.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26779\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26779\" style=\"width: 905px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26779\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/ancient-pyramid-argos-peloponnesia-greece.jpg\" alt=\"ancient pyramid argos peloponnesia greece\" width=\"905\" height=\"678\" title=\"The Greek Pyramid of Hellinikon predates the oldest ancient Egyptian Pyramid 1\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26779\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/alternativetourismnafplio.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/12\/ancient-pyramid-argos-peloponnesia-greece.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Image credit<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cOn the way from Argos to Epidauria there is on the right a building made very like a pyramid, and on it in relief are wrought shields of the Argive shape. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Here took place a fight for the throne between Proetus and Acrisius; the contest, they say, ended in a draw, and a reconciliation resulted afterwards, as neither could gain a decisive victory. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The story is that they and their hosts were armed with shields, which were first used in this battle. For those that fell on either side was built here a common tomb, as they were fellow citizens and kinsmen.\u201d\u2014<\/em><em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.perseus.tufts.edu\/hopper\/text?doc=Perseus:text:1999.01.0160:book=2:chapter=25&amp;highlight=pyramid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Pausanias: 2.25<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>T<\/i>he Pyramid is extremely interesting for a number of reasons, but mainly because of its supposed age.<\/p>\n<p>If reports are accurate, the Greek Pyramid could be older than the oldest Pyramid of ancient Egypt by at least 100 years (Djoser \u2013 2620 B.C.) and predates by 170 years the Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu \u2013 2550 B.C.).<\/p>\n<p>In 1938, archaeologists from the US placed the construction of the monument between 300 and 400 BCE.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26778\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26778\" style=\"width: 905px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26778\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Pyramid-of-Argos.jpg\" alt=\"Pyramid of Argos\" width=\"905\" height=\"603\" title=\"The Greek Pyramid of Hellinikon predates the oldest ancient Egyptian Pyramid 2\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26778\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Credit: Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1991, a different scientific team, led by Dr. I. Lyritzis of the Academy of Athens, concluded that the Pyramid of Hellinikon was built around 3000 BCE.<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.crystalinks.com\/pyrgreece.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">later research<\/a><\/strong> by the Academy of Athens and the University of Edinburgh placed the monument to around 2720 BCE.<\/p>\n<p>Dating measurements were performed by the Laboratory of Archaeometry at Dimokritos Research Institute in Athens and by the Nuclear Dating Laboratory of the Department of Physics at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>The number speak for themselves.
