Some blame it on climate change, but the truth is scientists have no idea.<\/p>\n<p>According to atmospheric physicist\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.utm.utoronto.ca\/cps\/faculty-staff\/moore-kent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kent Moore<\/strong><\/a>, a professor at the University of Toronto\u2019s Mississauga campus in an interview with Motherboard: the gigantic, mysterious hole <strong>\u201cis quite remarkable, it looks like you just punched a hole in the ice.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time massive holes have appeared on Antarctica.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26038\" style=\"width: 963px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-26038\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Antarctica-massive-hole.jpg\" alt=\"Antarctica massive hole\" width=\"963\" height=\"641\" title=\"A massive, mysterious Hole has just opened up in Antarctica and experts cant explain it 1\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>The blue curves represent the ice edge, and the polynya is the dark region of open water within the ice pack.\u00a0Image: MODIS-Aqua via NASA Worldview; sea ice contours from AMSR2 ASI via University of Bremen<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The mysterious apeparence\u2014referrede to as a polynya\u2014is off for a number of reasons but mostly because of its behavior.<\/p>\n<p>It was spotted for the first time in the 1970\u2019s but disappeared for several decades before showing up again, causing confusion among scientists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that time, the scientific community had just launched the first satellites that provided images of the sea-ice cover from space,\u201d Dr. Torge Martin of the GEOMAR Research Division\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2017-09-antarctica-weddell-polynya-kiel-climate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explains<\/a>\u00a0of its initial discovery many decades ago. \u201cOn-site measurements in the Southern Ocean still require enormous efforts, so they are quite limited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The massive hole was recently found by a group of researchers from the University of Toronto and the Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/soccom.princeton.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SOCCOM<\/a>) project, as they were monitoring the area with satellite technology after a similar hole appeared on Antarctica last years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26039\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26039\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-26039 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-code.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Antarctcia-massive-hole-in-the-ice.jpg\" alt=\"Antarctcia massive hole in the ice\" width=\"768\" height=\"511\" title=\"A massive, mysterious Hole has just opened up in Antarctica and experts cant explain it 2\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26039\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Winter sea ice blankets the Weddell Sea around Antarctica with massive extra-tropical cyclones hovering over the Southern Ocean in this satellite image from September 25, 2017. The blue curves represent the ice edge.\u00a0Image: MODIS-Aqua via NASA Worldview; sea ice contours from AMSR2 ASI via University of Bremen<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 2017 hole is the largest one ever detected, having a diameter of around 30,000 square miles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the depths of winter, for more than a month, we\u2019ve had this area of open water,\u201d says Kent Moore, professor of physics at the University of Toronto. \u201cIt\u2019s just remarkable that this polynya went away for 40 years and then came back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are many who are blaming the appearance of the massive holes on climate change, which is one of the main culprits for many abrupt changes seen on the Antarctica continent in the last couple of years.
