Enki (\u201cEn\u201d Lord, \u201cki\u201d Earth), or Ea (\u201cE\u201d Temple, \u201cA\u201d Water) is one of the three most important gods of Mesopotamian culture. He is the god of wisdom, lord of magic, construction, arts, design, and creation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Enki has been interpreted as The Lord of Earth; He was the stepbrother of the god Enlil, and son of An.<\/p>\n

His sole mission was to create men and to encourage other deities to believe in them. Enki was also the original patron God of the ancient city of Eridu, and his influence spread throughout history throughout\u00a0Mesopotamia\u00a0and to the\u00a0Canaanites,\u00a0Hittites\u00a0and even\u00a0Hurrians.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Enki was associated with the southern band of constellations called\u00a0stars of Ea<\/em>, but also with the constellation\u00a0A\u0160-IKU<\/strong>\u2014Pegasus, a constellation in the northern sky.<\/p>\n

Sometime during the second millennium BCE, Enki was referred to in writing by the numeric ideogram for \u201c40,\u201d which was also referred to as His \u201csacred number.\u201d<\/p>\n

Enki is the creator of mankind\u2014according to what is told in the epic legend Acadia of Atrahasis\u2014solely for the purpose of releasing the gods from their work. Enki used an existing hominid which he (Genetically?) manipulated in some in order to make man capable of understanding and meet the needs of the gods.<\/p>\n

He is also later considered mankind\u2019s savior since he warned Ziusudra of the universal flood.<\/p>\n

The Universal flood was brought upon mankind by Enlil, the \u201cLord of Heaven (air or atmosphere)\u201d.<\/p>\n

Before the divine assembly, apparently worried about the excessive proliferation of the human race and uncanny behavior Enlil proposed to put an end to humanity.<\/p>\n

Enlil managed to convince the rest of the gods, gathered in assembly, to authorize the extermination of Humanity.<\/p>\n

This legend probably gave rise to the later biblical account of Noah and the universal flood.<\/p>\n

He was the master shaper of the earth, god of\u00a0wisdom\u00a0and of all\u00a0magic, Enki was described as the lord of the\u00a0Abzu<\/a>\u00a0(Apsu in Akkadian), the freshwater sea or\u00a0groundwater\u00a0located within the\u00a0earth\u2014 where \u201cprimordial waters\u201d flow.<\/p>\n

He is also the creator of the apkallu (ab-gal-lu \u201cgreat man-fish\u201d in Sumerian) who during the day taught men in all kinds of subjects, and at night they retired to the bottom of the sea.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Enki was considered the keeper of the divine powers called\u00a0Me<\/em>, the gifts of\u00a0civilization. Enki\u2019s image was a double-helix snake or the\u00a0Caduceus, sometimes confused with the\u00a0Rod of Asclepius\u00a0used to symbolize medicine.<\/p>\n

Enki created the first seven wise men or \u201cAbgallu\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(Ab = water, Gal = great, Lu = Man), also known as\u00a0Adapa<\/a> using the blood of slain Kingu.<\/p>\n

Adapa, the first man, fashioned, later goes and acts as the advisor to the King of Eridu, when in the Sumerian king list, the\u00a0\u201cMe\u201d<\/em>\u00a0of\u00a0\u201ckingship descends on Eridu\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The main temple to Enki was called\u00a0E-abzu<\/i>, meaning \u201cabzu<\/a>\u00a0temple.\u201d It was a\u00a0ziggurat\u00a0temple surrounded by\u00a0Euphratean\u00a0marshlands near the ancient\u00a0Persian Gulf\u00a0coastline at the ancient city of\u00a0Eridu.<\/p>\n

It is considered the very first temple known to have been built in Southern Iraq.<\/p>\n

Four separate archaeological excavations at the site of\u00a0Eridu\u00a0have demonstrated the existence of a shrine dating back to the earliest\u00a0Ubaid period, more than 6,500 years ago. Over the following 4,500 years, the temple was expanded 18 times, until it was abandoned during the Persian period.<\/p>\n
